Ayurveda is the study of life (Ayu means life and veda means to study). In other words, it is a medical science that guides us to improve our lifestyle, life span and to cure the illness. To understand Ayurveda we will have to understand a couple of terms like Ayu (life span) and Swasth (Health). Great Ayurvedic physician Acharya Charak has defined Ayu as (English translated from Sanskrit):

"The union of body, senses, mind and soul is called Ayu(life span of a person)"

Great Ayurvedic surgeon Acharya Susruta has defined Swasth as (English translated from Sanskrit):

"All the dosas viz. the body dosas(Vata, Pitta and Kapha) and the mental dosas (Raj and Tam), all the agnis viz. body fires which are 13 in number (7 dhatuagni i.e. body fire for building materials of body, 5 bhootagni, 1 jatharagni i.e. digestive fire) and responsible for all catabolic and anabolic processes of our body, all mala (waste products) of our body (Purish i.e. stool, Mootra i.e. urine, Sweda i.e. sweat) should function properly and be in an equilibrium state. Also Atma(soul), Indriya(senses) and Mana(mind) should be in a happy state then a person can be called a healthy person. So we can say that Ayurveda is the holistic approach towards the health and treatment of an illness which includes our body and mind both."

Complete health = Physical health + Mental health.

Aim of Ayurveda

According to Acharya Charaka - the aim of Ayurveda is to maintain the well-being of a healthy person and if somehow the health is not maintained then use the Ayurvedic therapeutic methods to treat the illness. Now to maintain the healthy lifestyle Ayurveda has mentioned:

Dincharya ( daily routine for daytime)

Ratricharya (daily routine for the night)

Ritucharya (Routine for different seasons)

Aachar Rasayan (quality acts and behaviors)

In Ayurveda, treatment of illness has below stages:

1. Nidan Parivarjan – Avoiding the cause of disease

2. Aushadhi chikitsa – Treatment of diseases by medicines which includes Internal purifying medicines and External purifying medicines.

3. Shastra chikitsa – Surgical procedures

Sincere Thanks
